Calliachar wind farm near Aberfeldy in Perthshire and Port of Tilbury wind farm in Essex are two very different wind farm developments located almost 500 miles apart, yet they both generated electricity for the first time this week.
Construction began at Calliachar wind farm in May 2012. There are currently 3 turbines installed, with the remaining 11 on course for completion by summer 2013. Once completed, the wind farm will have a total capacity of 32.2MW.
All 4 turbines at Port of Tilbury wind farm have now been erected with the final turbine being installed last week. This wind farm is unique as the turbines were built specifically to provide 50% of the Port’s electricity needs with a total capacity of 9.2MW.
First generation is a significant milestone for both of these projects and demonstrates SSE’s commitment to generate clean, green electricity.
Port of Tilbury will be SSE’s most southerly wind farm and SSE’s most northerly operational wind farm is Spurness located in Orkney.
